Follow Friday #41

Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

Question: What hyped up book do you think was not worth all the talk?
Answer: OMG, so easy. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater (Click for Review). I gave that book 1.5 stars but it gets mostly 4 and 5 star ratings on Goodreads. I just don't think the writing style is for me. But even the story and plot itself was nothing spectacular. The book dragged on for the first 100 pages then got a little exciting in the middle then dragged for the last 1/3 of the book. I so wanted to like The Raven Boys but it was a no-go for me.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it--I always feel weird when I hate a book but everyone else gives it glowing reviews.

  3. 1.5, really? Everyone seems to love it. Goes to show how different all of our tastes are. We can't all love every book! :)

  5. The synopsis of the Raven Boys sounded good to me but knowing how her other series was I was scared this book would be a very slow read too. I still want to eventually read it but its no longer on the top 50 of my TBR pile. LOL.

    1. Yeah. Read it because of it's popularity but don't run to the stores. Nothing too great about it.

  7. Hello from a new follower. I've only read "The Scorpio Races" by that author, and was rather unimpressed too.

  10. That's exactly how I felt about The Scorpio Races, which was my pick this week. I was about 100 pages in, and nothing significant had happened yet. The Raven Boys sounds like it was much the same; that's disappointing to hear because I really liked its synopsis and put it on my TBR list.

    1. I really wanted to read Scorpio Races but not after Raven Boys.

And don't let the synopsis fool you, it is not the main plot of the book.

    Visit me & my sis!

I've heard of The Raven Boys. It's actually on my to-read list. Don't feel bad if you didn't like it because there are books that I just don't get and I know people side-eye me because of that. LOL.

  13. It's so funny how the same book is one star for some people and five stars for another. I loved The Raven Boys but I agree that there is so much hype about it.

  14. Totally agree! I really enjoyed Maggie's Wolves of Mercy series but this one just didn't appeal to me at all. I didn't even both requesting it on Netgalley. A shame too, I liked the author's style in her first books.

  18. Oh that's disappointing. I've only read MS's The Wolves of Mercy Falls - although I thought there was a tad too much Rilke - I've got The Scorpio Races on my bookshelf and hope to get started on that, but I've heard mixed reviews about that one too.

  20. I have this problem a lot with the novels that get reviewed and hyped on the blogs I follow. They'll get SO much hype, and everyone is all, "OMG, YOU MUST READ OR YOUR LIFE WILL NEVER BE COMPLETE!!"
Then I read them and either think, "Well, that was mediocre," or "What are these people reading that they think THAT book was so amazing?!"

  21. I actually have been waiting for this and all the positivity surrounding it has me extra excited. I hope I enjoy it more than you did, then :) I actually really loved her book 'The Scorpio Races' even though I know the slowness of it really put a lot of people off. I kind of loved that about it XD
