Today we are here for the the blog tour of Primal Song (Cajun Heat #1) by Danica Avet, a paranormal erotica novel. To celebrate the release of her book, Danica has provided us with a tantalizing guest post about how her characters are not made but born. As a writer myself, I always find it interesting the process in which writers come up with their characters. I hope you enjoy and make sure to check out all the links for more about this book and author.
A Character is Born
by Danica Avet
I don’t have set rules for characters. I’m more of an organic writer. Okay, you can stop snickering. It’s true. I don’t like rules. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m a rebel, but rules make me feel stifled. I’ve tried to learn plotting from some really talented authors and while I understood their methods, they don’t work for me. I can’t just think up a character and make it happen. Besides, my characters won’t let me.
You see, most of the time, my characters make themselves known to me in bits and pieces. It’s like listening to a radio station with a lot of static. I’ll catch a word here, a sentence there, all while I’m doing something completely boring and mundane. Like brushing my teeth, or taking my shower, or driving to work.
Just a sentence, just a little bit of conversation and
boring characters become people with attitude and personality, with history and
fears. From those lines that show up in my head, I learn who my characters are.
It’s in the words they use, in their tone of voice when they speak. That’s how
I know if they’re a strong person with anger issues, or if they have a dry
sense of humor. It’s really kind of cool, although I know it makes me sound
like I might be a little schizophrenic.
For instance, with Primal
Song, I kept hearing a couple of characters saying, “Such a shame about his
mane. Lions are supposed to have hair.” Who were they talking about? My hero,
Ram Reinhardt who’s the lead singer of a hard rock band. That little bit of
conversation played throughout the book with other characters shaking their
heads at his lack of lion-like locks.
For
me, characters aren’t made. They’re born. They have a past, a present, and a
future. They have issues they need to address before they can find happiness.
They have fears to face in order to move forward. Whether they’re shapeshifters
or witches or non-supernatural beings, they’re still people and I’m blessed to
have the chance to give each and every one of them a happy ending.
SummaryDeputy Daisy Picou is not impressed when Ram Reinhardt prowls into town all rock star swagger and big cat ego. She’s been burned by a lion before and has no intention of playing the fool twice. But with one scorching glance the mating frenzy ignites and passion trumps reason. An intense first encounter levels Daisy’s reservations—and most of her living room. And she’s not so sure she minds.
Ram Reinhardt has burned through and brushed aside just about every adrenaline-inducing thrill life’s thrown at him. But Daisy sets the gold standard for a premium rush. Her combative personality should turn him off, but every time they fight they end up in bed, or on the floor, or against a wall—and the sex is always more combustible than the time before. And he’s not about to give that up. Ever.

ReplyDeleteI love how Danica's characters make themselves known to her. Great post. The book sounds like a hot bit of fun too, smoldering even :)
ReplyDeleteExactly. I love the idea of how her characters come to be.
