Welcome to Bookish Blatherings, my new feature in which I will be rambling about bookish or bloggish things and hopefully you will join in on the discussion.
I don't know about everyone else but I started book blogging because of a few certain books, especially one book in particular. But before I get into that, I wanted to provide a little background story regarding my journey in becoming a book blogger. So, there I am, wrapping up my last semester at the University of Redlands. It was actually a short winter session, which means I was only taking one class. And that class was, drum roll please, Wine Appreciation. Oh yeah, don't me jelly! So for about a month I sat, drank, and learned about wine. For three hours a day, four days a week. Yeah, you could say I was a bit spoiled. It was freeing AWESOME. Now, I read a lot when I was young, but when high school and college came around I stopped. I was too adamant on getting all A's and doing extracurricular work to enjoy any fictional reading. But with my college career ending, and only me focusing on finding a job, I found myself having a little more time to play.
In walks my best friend who ruined/blessed my life with this series "I just had to read." She was gaga over. It's all she ever talked about. It was a paranormal YA trilogy that was all the craze at the time. I had never heard about it, which wasn't surprising since I fell out of the book world a long time ago. So, of course, I picked it up. O. M. G. Now, I have to assume some of you may have guessed which books I am talking about. And stop laughing at me. I didn't know any better. These were the first fictional books I had read in years and they were like gold at the time. A time when I had forgotten what good fiction was. So yes, me, Jennifer Bielman, was obsessed with Twilight!
Oh, in case you didn't know, I LOVE Charlie!
I freaking consumed the Twilight series in a matter of two weeks and I was hooked. I wanted MORE. But I wanted something a little more adult. I was 22 after all. So I searched "adult books similar to Twilight," and I hit the motherload. I was led to Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series, Kim Harrison's Hollows series, Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, and Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, just to name a few. And I found my passion for reading once again.
So college was over, and I could not find a job. I graduated the year in which the unemployment rate was at its highest. And I had very little experience to back up my degree in Business. So I started reading, a lot. Then I started writing, but that is a story for another day. All I did all day was read and look for a job. Then, one day, I just knew I had to share all these wonderful books I read with the world. So I researched book blogging and the rest is history.
Oddly enough, I never did review the Twilight saga. With the amount of books I have read over the years, and the knowledge I gained from writing, I now better recognize a good book from a bad book (when it comes to plot, writing, and so forth). I now know that Twilight is not what I thought it was. I did enjoy it. It's good fluff, but the writing and characterization, um yeah, not so great. But because of Twilight, my world opened up to all these amazing books that have changed my life.
I have a job now, actually a few jobs, and I am back in school for graphic and web design. And even though I am super busy, I never let school or work take away my reading addiction again. I am and will always be a total book nerd, book whore, book connoisseur, I don't know, whatever you want to call it. I am in it for the long haul this time. And I have Twilight to thank for that. Weird, right?
What book/books led you to the path of book blogging?
Or
How did you become a book blogger?

Bleh, Twilight. But I get what you mean! My gateway novel was Evernight by Claudia Gray and I hated books before that! Now to think back, like you with Twilight, Evernight wasn't that good. It was sweet but had insta-love, annoying love triangle and all that crap lol
ReplyDeleteLovely post and thanks for sharing! <33
Hmm, now you have me interested in Evernight. Even if it falls short like Twilight did, I'd love to see what book made you love reading.
DeleteGreat story!! :D
ReplyDeleteI have so many issues with Twilight (I don't like Bella and Edward), but it's one of those books that still sucks me in. I almost don't like that it does because I know it's not a great book.. but I can't help it X_X
I don't think there's one specific book that got me blogging. It was more a general desire to find more books in my favourite genre, but I couldn't, and I thought blogging was the answer to that!
Exactly. That's how I feel because sometimes I still have this temptation to read it again, even though I know it will drive me crazy.
DeleteGreat story! I have always been a voracious reading, devouring books like the M&Ms that I love. My sister at fuonlyknew got me into blogging. And Twilight. I love the story. Just because it isn't a five star novel doesn't mean it can't be read and enjoyed, the same for the movies. Not the best, but I do enjoy watching them - after all, I love those B movies too.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the acting in those movies, eeek. But I love them anyway. I can't help it. It's like an addiction.
DeleteTwilight was my gateway book too! But I discovered it while still in college, since that's when the first movie came out. :D
ReplyDeleteAngie @ Pinkindle
Oh wow, that's awesome. I discovered it when the first movie just started filming.
DeleteI loved Twilight too. And I majored in English, so I knew exactly what I was reading, but here's the thing about books, especially books you read purely for pleasure--every one you read, and every one you like does NOT have to be a Pulitzer Prize winner. I kind of feel like people who get caught up in dissecting every character and every plot element in a book are kind of missing the whole point. And I'm not saying every Twilight-hater is doing that, I'm sure a ton of people genuinely don't care for them for perfectly legitimate reasons. But deliberately reading a book for the sole purpose of eviscerating it . . . that I just don't understand. As for a specific book leading me to blogging, I don't think one did. For me, it's my overall love of books, and desire to share those books (ALL OF THEM, lol) with like-minded people. Also--I love this post :)
ReplyDeleteJessica @ Rabid Reads
I agree, just because a book does not follow the right plotting technique or whatever does not mean no one is going to like it. I like a lot of books many don't and that's okay.
DeleteTwilight made me discover that reading is 'fun' and not all books are serious. I've read the 1st book in 2006 and at that time I loved it (I was 17)...then when the movies came I was afraid to watch...but because Billy Burke was starring I craved! Love that actor and him playing Charlie was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm a bit ashamed about that saga, if you ask me in public sth about it I will deny I even know what you're taking about.
In 2008 I discovered Karen Chance's books (similar to Jeannine Frost, Illona Andrews...) they have 'badass heroine'....and love it!
Love this post <3
I have a major crush on Billy. I watch him Revolution now.
DeleteKaren Chance is part of my list of pre-blog books that I loved. So I know exactly what you mean.
Twilight was what got me into reading YA. I don't even remember why I joined GR. I eventually started a blog after being a member on GR for over a year. My blog is over a year old now. If I remember correctly the first review I posted on my blog was my least favorite book ever.
ReplyDeleteOMG, now that's weird, about your first review. I bet not many people can say that.
DeleteCoincidentally, I was thinking about the Twilight books just this week. In fact, it was because of authors like Stephenie Meyer, Charlaine Harris and Diana Gabaldon that I chose to write in the first person point of view. For me, that style draws me in and keeps me turning the pages. Thanks for your post and thanks to Jessica Haluska for her comments. I agree, there is much to learn and enjoy between the covers of non-Pulitzer Prize winning books. J.P. McLean
ReplyDeleteI only write in first person. I love it and it's because of similar authors too.
DeleteWHAT?! Why didn't I take wine appreciation in college? Hell, I was already appreciating it, so I might have well got credits for it. Damn, I missed out. I had a weird relationship with the Twilight books. They annoyed me, but I couldn't stop reading them. I actually started my blog as a way to share kindle books, but then it turned into reviews too. So I just kind of stumbled into it.
ReplyDeleteI like how you stumbled into it. :)
DeleteOh yeah, totally missed out. I so appreciate wine even more after that class. :)
Love it! Don't worry Jen, Twilight is what got me back into reading too and back into my book obsession :) Great post! I love reading about my friends journey and how they came to be where they are now..
ReplyDeleteChanzie @ Mean Who You Are.
Happy I am not alone.
DeleteNo shame in that. Twilight is what got me back into reading after I gave up my love for it due to all that crap we had to read in high school. Yea, high school English class ruined my love of reading. But I'm happy to have it back. I can't say there was a specific book that made me start wanting to blog about books though, since it was my co-blogger's idea that we start a book blog :)
ReplyDeleteI am right there with you. English class did the same to me.
DeleteI think your love of Twilight brought balance back into your life.
ReplyDeleteI read when I have time, and have been sticking to mysteries right now. Unfortunately, I tend to dissect them to see how it was done. It's becoming a bad habit.
Anna from Shout with Emaginette
Thanks, I think so too.
DeleteI didn't start blogging for one book, but I did start for the interaction with books. I love chatting with others and this was the best way to do it. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree. Having others to talk about books with is awesome.
DeleteThis is an awesome post, Jennifer! I admit to inhaling the Twilight Saga myself...and re-reading it *ahem* several times. :) I work in a bookstore and I always say that no matter how anyone see Twilight, readers everywhere should be thankful to Stephenie Meyer for bringing readers back and/or making new ones! I've always been a big reader and enjoyed book clubs and, of course, discussing books at work. :) The book that brought me into book blogging...The Happiness Project. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, Meyer really did bring back readers and make new ons. And made YA explode.
DeleteI will look into The Happiness Project.
Wow! I did something similar! I decided to get into book blogging because of some of my favorite paranormal books. Then I wrote one of my own!
ReplyDeleteI'm also a fan of Kelley Armstrong, to add one to your list, and Jim Butler's Dresden files. The Night Huntress series makes my list too :)
Can't wait to keep reading around your site!

Love Armstrong. The Dresden Files didn't work for me.
