Follow Friday #46

Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow!
Question: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?
Answer: I don't think anything is a deal breaker for me. I will try any book as long as it has an interesting concept. If the good parts of a book outweighs the bad, I can still enjoy it. But some things I hate that make it hard to enjoy a book are weak characters that I can't relate with and consistent bad decision making. I like strong characters. They can start out weak as long as they change for the better during the book. And when the protagonist keeps making bad decision after bad decision without ever learning her/his lesson, I lose interest real fast.

  1. I agree completely! Sometimes it's nice to have a character that starts off weak but then gets stronger, but if there's no development at all, I rarely end up liking the characters.

    1. I agree, I love growth but without it the characters are so boring.

  2. Yeah, bad decisions can be annoying. Old follower. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  3. Same. I don't outright avoid books because they have a love-triangle, as long as the concept outweights the many moments I will facepalm. But characters that never learn from their mistakes and so on, annoy me so much, that sometimes, I just have to DNF books.

  4. Yeah, I need to connect with my heroes and heroines. In some way at least. The TSTL heroine just makes me want to kill her myself! Haven't had too many of those thankfully!

    1. It is rare that one or two things make me stop or not read a book.

  6. It can be so frustrating. Why do authors write characters like that?

  7. Great answer. Weak characters are a no, no. They need be easy to connect with and empathise with and develop throughout the story for me to like them!

    1. I totally agree. They can start out weak, but if they don't grow, it's a no-go for me.

  8. I completely agree with you! That was one thing that kind of had me down about The Hunger Games. Katniss started out strong, then by the end she was weak and whiny. Though I can understand.. she had went through hell, but still!!

  9. I totally agree! Strong characters are my favorite. I don't mind if they are weak in the beginning, but I want to see development. If they stay whiny and stupid, I will put it down. Great answer!

    1. Development is key. Without it, the book takes a noise dive.

  12. Great answer, I agree with you. Weak characters bother me, too, unless they are weak for a reason and it is all part of the story. Thanks for stopping by and following!

  15. I agree completely. I get bored of a book pretty quickly if there's no character development. And I find it really difficult to enjoy a book when I don't like a character.

  17. I know exactly what you mean. I felt that way while reading Valkyrie Rising. The MC, Elli - she kept making these ridiculous decisions - all I could think is she is an idiot. Lots of eyerolling on my part.

    1. I haven't read that one but I would hate that. I feel like that for a lot of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan books.

  19. For me, I hate copycat books. I want each book I read to be a unique cast of characters and have a unique plot and a unique twist on an supernatural.

    That's not asking much, right?

  20. Weak characters are terrible indeed. I recently had a really hard time reading a book because I simply could not connect to any of its characters!

I find it difficult to deal with too many point of views, too many characters in just a few pages and plot roles. Also I don’t find bad edited books very attractive, and this can turn out to be a deal breaker in the end. Love triangles I can deal, but I’m getting tired of reading the same things in romance books...
