Question: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?
Answer: I don't think anything is a deal breaker for me. I will try any book as long as it has an interesting concept. If the good parts of a book outweighs the bad, I can still enjoy it. But some things I hate that make it hard to enjoy a book are weak characters that I can't relate with and consistent bad decision making. I like strong characters. They can start out weak as long as they change for the better during the book. And when the protagonist keeps making bad decision after bad decision without ever learning her/his lesson, I lose interest real fast.

I agree completely! Sometimes it's nice to have a character that starts off weak but then gets stronger, but if there's no development at all, I rarely end up liking the characters.

I agree, I love growth but without it the characters are so boring.
DeleteYeah, bad decisions can be annoying. Old follower. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
DeleteSame. I don't outright avoid books because they have a love-triangle, as long as the concept outweights the many moments I will facepalm. But characters that never learn from their mistakes and so on, annoy me so much, that sometimes, I just have to DNF books.
ReplyDeletePatricia // My Hop
Yup, those are usually my DNFs too.
DeleteYeah, I need to connect with my heroes and heroines. In some way at least. The TSTL heroine just makes me want to kill her myself! Haven't had too many of those thankfully!
ReplyDeleteHere's my Follow Friday
Have a GREAT weekend!
Old Follower :)
I know, right? I haven't found too many of those heroines either so that's good.
DeleteI agree, I try to give books a fair go.

Sabina @ Delirious About Books
It is rare that one or two things make me stop or not read a book.
DeleteIt can be so frustrating. Why do authors write characters like that?
ReplyDeleteGreat answer. Weak characters are a no, no. They need be easy to connect with and empathise with and develop throughout the story for me to like them!

I totally agree. They can start out weak, but if they don't grow, it's a no-go for me.
DeleteI completely agree with you! That was one thing that kind of had me down about The Hunger Games. Katniss started out strong, then by the end she was weak and whiny. Though I can understand.. she had went through hell, but still!!

Yeah, backwards growth is even worse so I know what you mean.
DeleteI totally agree! Strong characters are my favorite. I don't mind if they are weak in the beginning, but I want to see development. If they stay whiny and stupid, I will put it down. Great answer!
ReplyDeleteFF @thedailyprophecy.
Development is key. Without it, the book takes a noise dive.
DeleteI actually have something that is kind of a deal breaker... I am an old follower, and here is my FF post for this week.
ReplyDeleteHave a fantastic Friday.
Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI couldn't agree more, I love strong characters too and consistent week decision making gets really old, really fast! Thanks for sharing :) Old follower, here's my FFF

Thanks for hopping through.
DeleteGreat answer, I agree with you. Weak characters bother me, too, unless they are weak for a reason and it is all part of the story. Thanks for stopping by and following!

Megan @ Love, Literature, Art, and Reason
If it's part of a story, then it's okay.
DeleteI also agree with having strong characters.

Ha! I completely agree with you, I hate it when I don't get attached to characters. New follower GFC! Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteI have to love the characters to love the book.
DeleteI agree completely. I get bored of a book pretty quickly if there's no character development. And I find it really difficult to enjoy a book when I don't like a character.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower on GFC, by the way. You can find my FF here
I am happy I am not the only one.
DeleteI agree. Character development is so important. It can make or break a book.

Yup, I 100% agree.
DeleteI know exactly what you mean. I felt that way while reading Valkyrie Rising. The MC, Elli - she kept making these ridiculous decisions - all I could think is she is an idiot. Lots of eyerolling on my part.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read that one but I would hate that. I feel like that for a lot of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan books.
DeleteThat's SO true! Check out MY FF
ReplyDeleteFor me, I hate copycat books. I want each book I read to be a unique cast of characters and have a unique plot and a unique twist on an supernatural.
ReplyDeleteThat's not asking much, right?
I agree with you. Copycat books make reading boring.
DeleteWeak characters are terrible indeed. I recently had a really hard time reading a book because I simply could not connect to any of its characters!
ReplyDeleteI find it difficult to deal with too many point of views, too many characters in just a few pages and plot roles. Also I don’t find bad edited books very attractive, and this can turn out to be a deal breaker in the end. Love triangles I can deal, but I’m getting tired of reading the same things in romance books...

Weak characters are a pet peeve of mine, too! Good answer!
