Guest Post: A Good Vampire Romance

Now I know what you’re all thinking, and let me explain. Vampire Romance has been around before Twilight for years. These books are nothing like Twilight. But it’s not my place to bash Twilight, it’s been done to death and frankly it’s time to move on. I’m here to tell you about a wonderfully comedic and heartwarming story about a boy and his first love. Who happens to stalk the night and drinks blood. A classic story for the ages. It’s Christopher Moore’s Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story and its sequel You Suck.

 
No sparkles here. The first book follows the story of Jody and Tommy, two young people living in San Francisco in the mid-nineties. Jody is a single woman who is suddenly turned into a vampire and must learn to cope with her new life. Tommy is an aspiring writer who just moved into the city from a small backwater town. Pretty typical. Well what follows is a tale of love, turkey bowling, and comedy culminating in a showdown with the vampire who turned Jody. The other characters are The Emperor, homage to James Norton Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, and the Animals, Tommy’s coworkers on the late shift. Side note: If you don’t know who James Norton is, look him up. He’s one of the coolest people who ever lived. They bring some levity to the story and despite being mainly comedic relief, well the Animals anyway, they actually do a lot and contribute a lot to the story.

Now with more bloodsucking and sex. The sequel continues the adventures of Jody and Tommy as they struggle to keep their relationship intact despite the challenges presented by vampirism. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll leave it there. This novel also introduces Abby Normal, yes it’s a lame pun but go with it, as the couple’s assistant. Essentially her job is to make sure nothing happens during the day and do errands that can’t be done at night. She’s also a Goth. Surprising. What is funny is her almost over the top reaction to vampires, treating them with all the reverence you’d expect a teenage Goth to treat them with and then seeing Jody and Tommy’s almost nonchalantness about the whole thing. The second novel is very good with the Animals stealing the show as it follows to a fault their dealings with a prostitute they picked up in Vegas. Other than that, it’s a pretty good book.

It's on my list. I'll get to it someday. There is actually a third novel in the series titled Bite Me which further follows the characters. But to be honest, I haven’t read it yet. Sorry. But from what I’ve gleamed from browsing it in bookstores and reading the back cover, it’s more about Abby than Tommy and Jody who to be honest were my main draw to the series. I’m sure it’s an excellent book like the rest of Christopher Moore’s works, and hopefully I’ll get a chance to read it someday. Overall the series is very good. It’s light hearted fun and has a really endearing love story. It’s well written, funny, and just a fun read. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for something light and not too deep. Don’t read into it too much and just enjoy the story.
