Follow Friday #47

Feature and Follow Friday is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Gain new followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow!

Question: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?
Answer: I think it depends on how well they are written and how similar they are. I don't mind similar concepts but if they are too similar then I become too aware of the similarities. Unless the new book is better than the old book then I usually don't enjoy reading it. I enjoyed Obsidian even though it reminded me a lot of Twilight. I think Obsidian was a better version of Twilight, but with aliens instead of vampires. Retellings (I am thinking of fairytales and stuff) can be very well done or just horrendous. It all depends on the author. Now fanfic is not something I have read before so I am not too sure how I feel about it.

Please let me know in your comment if you followed me so I can follow you back!

    1. She does have a certain appeal but her books aren't for everyone. You should def try her out though.

  4. I loved Obsidian as well, but for some reason it didn't remind me of Twilight at all. I think that's also part of the reason why there are so many different answers this week. Like seriously 50/50! We all have different perceptions of things!

If anything Obsidian kind of reminded me of Roswell, but obviously with noticeable differences! Maybe I say that just because Roswell was about teen aliens in hiding with super powers. Although the powers are different.

Okay, rambling now...but yes. I agree. I don't mind reading books with similar ideas because the author will always tell the story differently. Like Amanda Carlson and Kelley Armstrong. Both wrote about the only female werewolf, yet their stories were entirely different! :D

    1. LOL, I love your ramblings. It does seem like everyone feels different about this on. Obsidian doesn't remind me of Roswell but I can see the similarities now that you mention it.

I have to check out this Amanda Carlson.

  7. I also haven't read a lot of fanfic, it's funny that that's just a part of the writing world I've managed to stay out of!

  8. I agree! I don't mind as long as there seems to be some original thought put into the story.
