What I Love About Dystopian Books

I love the feeling I get when I open a dystopian book. Even
just reading the first line fills me with equal amounts of dread and
excitement. I know I’m not reading about a good place, I never quite feel safe,
and I think it makes me care sooner for the characters when I know their lives
are in danger before I even turn the first page. My favourite kinds of books
are ones that take you on an exciting ride through the story and leave you
breathless by the end. Some of my favourites that tick all the boxes are ACID
by Emma Pass, THE GLIMPSE by Claire Merle, and DUALED by Elsie Chapman – all
three are bursting with twists and turns, fast-paced action, strong heroines, a
touch of romance.

"I wake up to a shrieking sound.
The wailing surrounds me, echoing off the walls and
interrupting fitful sleep filled with nightmares and torture.
I pat my hand on the nightstand until I find the alarm clock
and make it stop. I rub my eyes. The red numbers on the clock display 6:03 a.m.
Red
Red digital numbers, like the ones on the clock outside that
towers above us. Counting down, down down. Red like blood, red like rage, like
hate, all of which surrounds me. I force myself to get up and take a deep
breath.
6:04 a.m. With not long to live, I don't want to spend
anymore time sleeping than necessary."

KATE ORMAND is a YA writer represented by Isabel Atherton at Creative Authors Ltd. She lives in the UK with her family, her partner, and a cocker spaniel called Freddie. She recently graduated from university with a first class BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Painting. It was during this course that Kate discovered her love of reading YA books, prompting her to try a new creative angle and experiment with writing. Kate is also a member of an online group of published writers and illustrators called Author Allsorts. And she writes children’s picture books under the name Kate Louise.

DeleteSo true. I haven't read that many dystopians really though I enjoy them a lot. I am fortunate to have read the really good ones. I have Dualed and Acid on my to-read list. Excellent excerpt :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

DeleteThe one thing I would save would be my little sister :D Above all else, that's what I would do. I really want to read this book as well! I have never read one where the main character is waiting for death, knowing how much time they have and everything. I would eager to see what it's like!
