Summary
“I raise my chin as the buyers stare. Yes. Look. You don’t want me. Because, eventually, accidentally, I will destroy you.”

In a world at war, a slave girl’s lethal curse could become one kingdom’s weapon of salvation. If the curse—and the girl—can be controlled.
As a slave in the war-weary kingdom of Faelen, seventeen-year-old Nym isn’t merely devoid of rights, her Elemental kind are only born male and always killed at birth — meaning, she shouldn’t even exist.

Standing on the auction block beneath smoke-drenched mountains, Nym faces her fifteenth sell. But when her hood is removed and her storm-summoning killing curse revealed, Nym is snatched up by a court advisor and given a choice: be trained as the weapon Faelen needs to win the war, or be killed.
Choosing the former, Nym is unleashed into a world of politics, bizarre parties, and rumors of an evil more sinister than she’s being prepared to fight . . . not to mention the handsome trainer whose dark secrets lie behind a mysterious ability to calm every lightning strike she summons.

But what if she doesn’t want to be the weapon they’ve all been waiting for?
Set in a beautifully eclectic world of suspicion, super abilities, and monsters, Storm Siren is a story of power. And whoever controls that power will win.
At A Glance
So interesting and exciting, but slow in the beginning and the romance fell flat.

The Good
After this book picked up, I was blown away with the storyline and action. There was so much intrigue and manipulations. Secrets were definitely abundant through the whole book. And the twists! I did not see some of those coming.

Nym has had a freaking horrible life, but she was so snarky and defiant right from the beginning, it was hard not to like her. She held on to her strength throughout the book, but she also let her vulnerable side slip threw. Her power was freaking astronomical. I totally understood why she was afraid of herself. I would be too. It was nice to see her gain confidence as she learned to control her power. The things she could do with just a thought, SCARY!

Except for Eogan, I really liked the other characters. Colin made me smile so much. Breck pissed me off but I couldn't help but like her too. And the evil characters were so evilly! I loved hating them. And there was a lot of characters to hate, that's for sure.

Near the end, you are thrown into this action scene that will leave you breathless. But the ending will have you pulling our your hair. Effing cliffhanger!!!

The Bad
The first half dragged quite a bit for me. It wasn't unbearable but I found my interest wondering a few times.

The romance wasn't that great. We never really got to know Eogan, so I didn't really feel like rooting for him.

The Snuggly
The romance kind of held Nym back. There was almost no reason to like Eogan, especially with what he has done and how he treated Nym, so I never understood why she was so infatuated with him. But I did love watching Colin flirt with Nym. Even though he flirts with all the girls, you could tell Nym was something special to him.

No sexy time, so very YA.

Final Thoughts
Overall, well done. I had fun and felt satisfied in the end. I would hope to learn more about Eogan in the next book because I would like to continue this series for sure. Recommended.

Author Bio
Aside from Goodreads, I hang out on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, and my BLOG. Come say hi!

Officially though: Mary Weber is a ridiculously uncoordinated girl plotting to take over make-believe worlds through books, handstands, and imaginary throwing knives. In her spare time, she feeds unicorns, sings 80’s hairband songs to her three muggle children, and ogles her husband who looks strikingly like Wolverine. They live in California, which is perfect for stalking L.A. bands, Joss Whedon, and the ocean. She likes orange trees, tattoos, and ALL the music. ;0)

BOOK 1 in my YA fantasy STORM SIREN trilogy releases Aug 2014 from Thomas Nelson, HarperCollins. Eep!

  2. I believe she has the ability to detonate things with a single glance. That would be a curse that could win a war. Of course, I'm sure that's not it, but what fun that could be!

  3. I love her hair on the cover. The characters sound great, even the evil ones. That outweighs a romance for me.

  4. Glad it picked up, and while the romance might be lacking all the twists to the plot sound good.

  5. The snark, the twist and turns, and the power all sounds great. I hate that things dragged some for you though and that the romance wasn't up to par. I've added this one to my to-read list. I am hoping the story gets even better further on. Great review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

  6. Great review, Jennifer! I actually just finished reading this book last night. I'm going to rate it a 3 or 3.5, I think, but my issues were totally different than yours (that's always interesting to me). I do agree that we learned very little about Eogan, but I have to ask--how could you be satisfied with that ending??! LOL!

    1. LOL, I know, for some reason I was totally cool with the cliffhanger, open-ended ending. I don't know why. Usually it would bother me. Don't know what's changed.

  7. Oh it's too bad that the first part was like that but well at last you were able to find some things to like in a while. I'm quite curious I didn't know this one I confess.

  8. i've been meaning to read this one but now i've got a few issues :( I hate it when books have slow beginnings since i usually get bored and DNF them also not the biggest fan that the romance wasn't all that great. I mean if a romance is in abook it's got to be there, ya know? oh well! Great review!

    1. Well, I should have said the first scene was good, but then it got a little slow then it picked up again. I would try it out if I were you.

  9. It's a shame that the first half of the novel dragged and was really slow--that's never fun! Eeeeh, I hate it when there's a romance but we don't get to know about the love interest much so really there's no point.

    Great review! <33
