Summary
It can happen in a flash. One minute she’s kissing her boyfriend, the next she’s lost in the woods. Sixteen-year-old Ellie Cox is losing time. It started out small…forgetting a drive home or a conversation with a friend. But her blackouts are getting worse, more difficult to disguise as forgetfulness. When Ellie goes missing for three days, waking up in the apartment of a mysterious guy—a guy who is definitely not her boyfriend, her life starts to spiral out of control.

Perched on the edge of insanity, with horrific memories of
her childhood leaking in, Ellie struggles to put together the pieces of what
she’s lost—starting with the name haunting her, Gwen. Heartbreakingly
beautiful, this poignant story follows one girl’s harrowing journey to finding
out who she really is.
May not be for everyone but it sure was for me!
The Good
Okay, sooooo, this review is going to be for me. Sorry, can't help it. Fragile Line is a unique book that I think many people will find a lot of faults with. I saw them, I just didn't care. Because all that mattered to me was that I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!
Sure, I figured out what was happening pretty fast. But that's only because I happen to know a lot about what was wrong with Ellie. But I didn't care about the predictability, because the journey Ellie took to find out what was happening to her was heartbreaking and exciting. And there was still plenty of mystery about Ellie's past and lost memories. Those feels! You can't read this book and not feel something. Ellie is not the strongest person, but I liked that about her. It gave her more realistic character, more depth. But near the end, she started taking more control of her life and I loved her more for it.
The writing was beautiful. Skye completely drew me into the story with her prose. I did not put this book down once. This is a one-sitter. Ellie's condition was handled well. It's interesting to get such a close up perspective on this 'problem.' The pacing felt right and the characters felt genuine. I would for sure read book 2 if this became a series.
The Bad
The only thing that didn't appeal to me was the last 1/4 of the book. I can't say too much, but I wanted to stay in Ellie's head. I was good there. I wasn't really into the..."other." I guess it made sense for the plot, but I found my interest waning a bit. And the ending was meh. I am assuming this is going to be a series since not much was resolved.
The Snuggly
Even though I don't consider this a romance book, there is romance sprinkled throughout. Ellie has a boyfriend and they go through a rough patch because of Ellie's blackouts, but he was an overall great guy. In the end, he was there for Ellie. And then there was the mystery guy that Ellie meets after waking up from a blackout. He was also pretty awesome. I guess this could be considered a love-triangle, but I didn't feel that way. You would have to read it to see why.
There are sexual situations but they all fall under the YA category.
Final Thoughts
Some people may not find Fragile Line as awesome as I did because there are flaws. But I just didn't really care about the not so great parts because the story was just too damn interesting. I have read other books from Skye and she seems to have a way with developing interesting characters that are hard not to fall in love with. Very recommended.
Quotes
"I want to scream. To run in there and tell him that yes it was my body in that picture, but somehow I wasn't in control of it. Like sleepwalking, or being hypnotized, or...or...I don't even know. All I know is it wasn't me."
“I like everything about you, Ells. Including your scar. But I know you’re self-conscious about it.”
I grin. “Suddenly you’re a mind reader?”
“I’d like to call it a movement analyst.” He takes my left hand and cups it over the bracelet on my right. “You cover your scar when you’re nervous,” he says, straight-faced. Then he lets out an impish chuckle, pulling my hand away. “Now you can make better use of your hands.”
The feeling inside my chest is so split it’s impossible to put into words. I’m near Shane’s house. I know this. And am enormously comforted by the familiar roar of the river. But the trees are gigantic, which makes me feel small and weak. Incapable of getting to my feet and finding my way home. Or back to Shane’s.
His bed, his arms, the taste of red licorice on his tongue—that’s the last I remember. But is that all? Or did we do more? I glance down. Below the hem of my shirt, my jeans are unbuttoned. Mud covers my shoes and knees. It looks like I was running and tripped.
I want to scream.

I love it when the book hits me so hard that I can overlook the flaws and get lost in the story. That's some good writing. Great review, Jennifer.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what happened to me with this book.
DeleteCan't wait to read
ReplyDeleteThis looked so good I actually went out of my way to buy it :) hopefully I can read it.
ReplyDeleteYaaaay, awesome. happy reading.
DeleteIt definitely makes a world of difference if the story is so good that it makes you overlook all the other faults that you've caught. Glad it still worked out for you
ReplyDeleteI love how you break things down so people have the choice to ignore reading "the bad" if in case they don't want to be swayed negatively. =)
Thanks. Sometimes I just want to know about the romance in a book or why someone didn't like a book, so I thought I would break up my reviews the way I wish others were broken up.
DeleteFor me, if I absolutely can't book the book down despite flaws I may notice, it's usually a five star or close book. Obviously, it has a large affect on making you want to invest all your time finishing it, so it must be good. Great review! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.
ReplyDeleteYup, exactly. Like Beautiful Disaster. So many flaw but I could give two craps!
DeleteI agree with Tabitha--I love how you separate the different parts of your review. And this book sounds INTENSE. I don't know if it's for me or not, but I will definitely keep and eye on it. Great review, Jennifer ;)
ReplyDeleteIt is intense. I couldn't imagine being in her position.
DeleteDoes she have split personality? I know, I know ... spoilers. I sounds interesting. I know what you mean about seeing the faults but not caring.
ReplyDeletehehe, I don't mind being a little spoilery in the comments. Yes, she has Multi-personality.
