Summary

Even after years of trauma therapy, Peyton still believes she’s broken.  She has little desire to date or show off her natural beauty, content simply to hang out with her best friends and run her pie shop in New Orleans.  But her world turns upside-down when a handsome architect and self-confessed player shows up in her shop and thinks she’s perfect, much more than the usual hook-up.  While Peyton does her best to resist his charms, believing she could never be enough for him, she can’t deny the obvious heat between them.

With Reed determined to have her, Peyton must decide whether to continue to hide behind her apron and baggy clothes or take a chance and share her scars with Reed, a man with a playboy reputation and scars of his own — a dark past he can’t possibly share with Peyton, not after learning the horrors she’s endured. But if they can find a way to trust each other, and themselves, they just might be able to heal, to save each other, to live perfectly broken together.

At A Glance
Awesome slow building romance but the big mystery wasn't handled well.

The Good
If you are reading Perfectly Broken, then you are reading it for the slow but hot romance. Peyton's past makes her reluctant to let Reed (a self-proclaimed bed hopper) in. But once Reed wins her over, they both change for the better. Peyton opens up and starts to heal, and Reed sees that even though a bunch of bedmates can be fun, one perfect woman is divine. And let's not beat around the bush, he gets so whipped. hehe. But he needed it.

Obviously, Peyton's reluctance to let a man romantically into her life is justified. Not many people can come back from what she went through. By she really blossoms once she lowers her guard and starts being honest with herself and with Reed. I love how she still had this passion inside despite her past and how Reed brought it out to its fullest potential. She bantered with him like a champ, even when he intimidated her. Mad respect for that.

The sweetest thing was how Reed was so determined to win Peyton over. He never gave up because he knew she was something special. He let his bad boy ways fall to the wayside as his life became about pleasing Peyton and making her life as perfect as possible. That kind of dedication, just...wow. I want, I want. Reed's protective nature really worked for their relationship because I think Peyton needed someone who would take care of her, keep her from danger.

The witty dialogue was spot on. The characters evoked a lot of emotions in me. These two both had trouble pasts but they found peace within each other. Such an amazing love story.

The Bad
There is nothing hugely wrong with this book. It is a great romance. But the mystery aspect with that horrible thing Reed's father did, the thing we are kept in the dark about the whole time, just didn't pan out. When revealed, there was no detail given, no story told. Just, "Hey, this happened, so...yeah."

I think Peyton overreacted over what Reed wasn't telling her. I wouldn't have shared that information with many people either. And it wasn't like it had anything to do with him. I would have seen Peyton's reaction as over-dramatic and steered clear of her if I were Reed.

The Snuggly
The best part of this book was the slow building romance. Peyton takes forever to let Reed in but it so worked for the story. They got to know each other as real people, not just sexual objects, which seems to happen in some romances lately.

The sex takes FOREVER to happen, which I understood with Peyton's past, but, OMG, I was just as sexual frustrated as Reed was by the end. There is sex in this book though, eventually. Good for a new adult/adult audience.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Perfectly Broken left me feeling happy. The romance was great and the story flowed well the whole time. I will be keeping my eye on this author from now on. Recommended.

Author Bio

Prescott Lane is originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, and graduated from Centenary College in 1997 with a degree in sociology. She went on to Tulane University to receive her MSW in 1998, after which she worked with developmentally delayed and disabled children. She currently resides in New Orleans with her husband and two children.
