Summary
I was born more than a thousand years ago.
Put into a cryogenic tube at age seventeen, forgotten during a holocaust that decimated the world, I've finally been awakened to a more serene and peaceful future.

But things at the hospital are new and strange. And it’s starting to scare me.
Everyone is young. Everyone is banded and tracked. And everyone is keeping secrets.

The cute geneticist Michael Bennett might be the only good thing in this crazy new world where “life is precious” but no one seems free to live it. The problem is, I don’t think he’s being totally honest with me, either.

When I’m told only I can save the human race from extinction, it’s clear my freeze didn’t avoid a dreadful fate. It only delayed the horror…

Jennifer: Can you describe Mirror X in three words?
Karri: Compelling, unique, dystopian

Jennifer: What inspired you to write your book?
Karri: I’m a sci-fi freak, so I love world building. Since this book takes place in the future, I could go crazy when it came to creating this society. There are also people who were alive before I was, and I wish I could have met them. Without giving away the storyline of MIRROR X, the concept in this book allows this to happen. You’ll have to read it to know what I’m referring to J

Jennifer: How did you come up with the world in Mirror X?
Karri: The world in MIRROR X is very sterile and controlled, but to its citizens, it’s almost perfect. This is based on the idea that want you know is what you think it right, the way it’s supposed to be. Only an outsider can see the flaws in this type of society. Cassie does this, and in the process, shifts the skewed point of views of some of the other characters. This world is based on what I think it would be like when world leaders fight for absolute power while under trying circumstances.

Jennifer: Finish this sentence: I cannot write without...
Karri: ...a glass of iced tea. Yum. Unsweetened. My favorite. I have a glass sitting next to me right now.

Jennifer: Is there any writing wisdom/tips you have learned along your writing journey that you can share with first-time writers?
Karri: Read, read, read, and write, write, write! The more you read the better writer you become. I know this to be true, since I’m a high-school English teacher. My strongest writers are also the students who read all the time. Read books in your genre. When it comes to writing, everyone is different. Some authors begin with an outline, and some, like me, have the plot in their heads and just start writing. You’ll have to figure out what works best for you. Just remember to start with some action and get the conflict right away. You need to keep your readers turning the pages. I’d also join a critique group. Trading and critiquing each other’s work is a great way to develop your writing skills. If you have any questions about writing, you can also email me, and I’ll share what I know. My email is kthompson489@gmail.com.

Jennifer: Can you tell us three surprising facts about yourself?
Karri: 1) I love rock music – Korn, Linkin Park, Avenge Sevenfold, Seether. My students have trouble believing this.

2) I have a ten-row concert rule. I love live music and go to concerts any chance I get, but unless I’m within the first ten-rows, forget it. If I can’t see the band sweat, I’m not close enough.

3) I would love to buy a house in Munich, Germany, and live there every summer. I went to Germany two years ago, and I’m dying to go back. Oh, and I want a Porsche to drive while I’m there. Lol.

Jennifer: What are a few of your favorite books (from other authors) of all time?
Karri: When it comes to classics, I love Great Expectations (Charles Dickens), Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck) and The Sun Also Rises (Earnest Hemingway). When it comes to more contemporary works, I love, love, love, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and anything by Billie Letts. Oh, and I can’t forget The Hunger Games.

Jennifer: So what's next after Mirror X? Are there any other projects you are working on or plan to?
Karri: There are two more books in that series. Book 2 is written. Book 3 is in my head. I don’t have a title for the second and third book yet. I’ll have to ask my street team to help me come up with them. I recently wrote another YA sci-fi. It needs to be edited a bit and then hopefully it will sell to a publisher. I’m also working on a contemporary YA romance called ASHES ON THE RHINE. It takes place in Germany. I just might have to go there again for research purposes. J

Jennifer: I can't thank you enough for taking the time to answer a few of my questions. Is there anything else you would like to mention before we part ways?
Karri: I’d like to thank you for having me on your blog. I really appreciate it. I also want readers to know that I love meeting and interacting with them, so I’d love it if they’d connect with me on Facebook and Twitter. I’m Karri Thompson on both, so I’m easy to find. Thank you again.

  1. Great interview, Jennifer! It's always fun to learn about authors and there quirks. BUT . . . I have to say . . . as a Southerner, I am shocked and appalled by her love of UNsweetened tea ;) HA. Seriously, though--this book looks interesting, for sure. Thanks for sharing!

  2. i love the 10 row concert rule, I'll be adapting that!

And I agree with Jessica about the iced tea although I think unsweetened is the healthier way to go.

  9. I'm really enjoying that cover. LOVE those bands as well. Some great advise there for aspiring writers. People ask me when I'll write a book since I read so much. I just don't have a story in me. I think that's so wonderful for the people that do! Great post :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.
